Through public Events, artistic practice and research become counter-information tools to raise awareness in a broad number of people on important environmental and social issues as economic globalization and the negotiations around Kyoto Protocol on climate change. We believe in a grass roots movement that put into question the essential relationships on which the system is based. The focal point of these cultural campaigns is the evolution of political conviction into artistic actions and vice versa. We will present cultural performances as political actions because everyone is artist and activist at the same time. Artists and activists should bring testimony of the devastate effect of economic globalization on culture and on historical memory of individuals and populations that are the base of the creativity and independency of human beings. We want to show the possibility of cultural and interdisciplinary connections not rooted in homogeneity and hegemony.

Degree Zero will work together with the Rising Tide coalition on climate justice to create an infrastructure amongst activists for COP 6 1/2 in may 2001. We will establish connections with German activists, interested groups, intellectuals, artists and minorities. Workshops, discussions and public events (performances and screenings with video activists AkKraak) will be organized to inform people on the climate change issue and on the complicated negotiations around the Kyoto Protocol. Degree Zero aim to mobilize activists for an international day of climate action on the 21 may '01. The Rising Tide believes that a minimum of 60% immediate carbon reduction, as proposed by the UN's own scientists (the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change), is necessary to stabilize the Earth's Climate. The effectiveness of any solution proposed by the UN will be undermined by the process of economic globalization as promoted through the policies of international institutions such as the World Trade Organization (WTO) and the World Bank(WB). This economic process is deeply unsustainable and exacerbate climate change in its accelerating demand for the consumption of fossil fuels. for more info see:Risingtide & Indymedia-Climate.
Rome june 2001: rally point to discuss ideas and implement strategies for the G8 meeting in Genova july '01.
In july 2001 there will be in Genova the G8 meeting , the Heads of State of the world's top industrialized countries will meet to discuss political and economical matters of importance for the hole world. Before the G8 meeting, Degree Zero will create in june a platform of dialog and interdisciplinary action, for social justice, environmental protection and to question the rule of art and culture in the globalized society to respect minorities and the environment. Degree Zero will be a space of co-operation for the different active subjects of alternative practice and communication, a temporary lab of social and cultural experimentation. The project aims to put emphases on the interrelation of all types of struggle and to create an infrastructure for activism where there is none. Through debate, workshops, political art events in public spaces, video screenings, and use of alternative and independent media (streaming media, articles and publications on the internet), we want to sensibilize and mobilize a big variety of 'marginals' (minorities, activists, interested groups, intellectuals, artists, etc ) in Italy.
